EARTH’S REMARKABLE ROOF

A space rock of 3-5 feet in size, traveling 75000 miles per hour, according to one estimate, slammed into Earth’s atmosphere over New England, USA, on May 30^th, 2026. The impact created a bright flash, and the meteor disintegrated into meteorite fragments that fell into the Cape Cod Bay area of Massachusetts. People were startled by the ensuing sonic booms, heard over a wide area, and many weren’t sure what caused it.

Had the atmosphere not stopped the trajectory of the space object, it would have struck Earth’s surface, and the result would have been disastrous. A thinner atmosphere would make our planet more vulnerable to meteoroid impacts. Imagine humans living with the expectation that a meteor can strike anytime!

The Protective Role of the Atmosphere

On the contrary, Allah (swt) created an atmosphere with a sufficient density of gases to intercept many incoming space rocks. Our attention is drawn to the protective role of the atmosphere by the verse in the Quran that says, “We made the sky a protected ceiling, yet still they turn away from Our signs.”¹ Through modern science we are made aware of the external protection afforded by the Earth’s atmosphere and the ‘magnetosphere’ above it. Understandably, today’s commentators of the Quran interpreted the term ‘sakfam mahfuzah’ or ‘protecting roof’ from the ayah in the light of contemporary science. This can be considered a Quranic miracle, but more significantly, a reminder of Allah’s control over and care of His creatures.

Another Quranic verse reads, “He is the One Who has made the Earth a place of settlement for you and the sky a canopy…”.² The translated word ‘canopy’ used to describe the sky can imply a protective nature.

The Arabs during the early period of Islam, read the Quranic verse that described the Earth as having a protected roof. However, they had no idea that the Earth is shielded from danger according to what we know from science today. Nevertheless, some scholars opined that an ayah could have several acceptable interpretations. Therefore, the understanding of what this verse meant to Muslims of the past still stands.³

Classical Interpretations of the Protecting Roof

According to Al-Qurtubi of the seventh century, there have been five classical interpretations of the protecting roof. In short, a protection by the stars from the devils (shayateen), a preservation without the need for supporting pillars, a preservation from the sky collapsing, a safeguard from any creature interfering with the sky, and a protection from shirk and sin in that there is no disobedience to God in the heavens unlike the earthly realm.³

The Earth’s atmosphere is subjected to the occasional bombardment of small sized space rocks. The mesosphere – the third layer of Earth’s atmosphere – incinerates millions of sand or pebble sized meteoric extraterrestrial objects daily. A 3 feet (one meter) rock is said to strike the atmosphere several or more times a year and then subsequently disintegrates. We have examples of larger rocks massively exploding in the atmosphere near Earth’s surface with some local damage. One case is the Tunguska airburst in 1908 where a 50–-100-meter rock exploded and flattened 800 square miles of forest in Siberia. Another incident is the Chelyabinsk episode of 2013 where a 20-meter rock busted and shattered thousands of windows.

As for large sized meteoroids or asteroids that can destroy a city or much of civilization, the possibility of an event of this sort is so remote that no-one stays up at night worrying about such an occurrence. Theoretically, for example, we are told that an asteroid space rock the size of two football fields can catastrophically impact the Earth but for it to occur in any given year is extremely low. Also, only once every few million years, an object large enough to threaten human civilization can be expected. In the past, we knew of one large-scale collision about 66,000 million years ago, which led to the dinosaur’s extinction. It can be said, therefore, that a significant devastating strike is potentially a rare, geologic-scale phenomenon.

Among its celestial neighbors in space, Earth enjoys a special status of protection, thanks to the job of its atmosphere in obstructing space rocks. For example, it is estimated that Earth’s Moon with no atmosphere, currently receives several hundred impact events per year. Similarly, Mars, with its thin atmosphere, encounters frequent bombardments and are the cause of the planet’s ‘mars quakes’.

The Role of the Ozone Layer

Allah (swt) has assigned other protective functions to the atmosphere beyond curbing the entry of space rocks. The portion called the stratosphere with its ozone layer plays an important role in absorbing harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which if allowed to penetrate, would seriously harm plant and animal life on Earth. Moreover, the atmosphere absorbs nearly all incoming X-rays and gamma rays which can prove deadly to life. The selective control of what type of UV light from the Sun is allowed to enter through the atmosphere is another point illustrating Allah’s protection of life on Earth. The small amount of UV radiation essential for photosynthesis – a process where green plants manufacture food – is given a free pass. Another role of the atmosphere is to serve as a blanket that prevents the loss of significant amounts of heat from our planet. Without this physical barrier, we could not survive the extreme cold of space.

The description of a protective covering is not confined to the atmosphere. The term can also embrace the ‘magnetosphere’, a vast region of space encircling Earth that acts as a magnetic shield. This vital structure serves to protect against solar eruptions or flares, solar winds- high-speed charged particles constantly blown by the Sun -, and high-speed energy particles from space. Without this shield, the inevitable result would be destruction of DNA, loss of water and air, and civilization. Human life would become impossible.

A Sign Among His Signs

A marvelously engineered system is at work above the Earth’s surface. A vast region that surrounds our world and protects it against external threats. Centuries ago, Allah Almighty informed us in the Qur’an of this protective shield. The ‘protecting roof’ is a sign of Allah’s creation, one that people will be reminded about from time to time, and one that will last till the end of time. However, as Allah says in the Quran, “And how many signs in the heavens and the earth do they pass by? Yet they turn (their faces) away from them!” ⁴
